At our house, we don’t typically hire a babysitter or go out on the town for an expensive wine-and-dine romantic evening. But this year, we are picking up a “date night” cheese and charcuterie platter after work, complete with delicious meats, cheeses, fruits and breads – perfect for a fun, family-style picnic in the living room with our little boys. (Confession: peanut butter and jelly will probably make an appearance, too.)
Because you know what? You don’t have to spend a lot of money to do something special. In fact, if you’re looking for something sweet and simple that comes from the heart, you’ve come to the right place! Today we’re talking about homemade heart-shaped treats, perfect for the sweethearts in your life.
5 Heart-Shaped Treats for Your Valentines
- Chocolate Heart Snickerdoodles. Buttery cookies. Melt-in-your-mouth chocolate. Colorful red sprinkles. Perfect for Valentine’s Day, these cute little cookies will be a hit with every kid at heart.
- Sweet Caramel Rolls. Have an ordinary tube of refrigerated cinnamon rolls handy? For breakfast in bed, swirl together ½ jar Creamy Caramel Sauce and 2 tablespoons of melted butter into a round cake pan; place the rolls on top before baking. You’ll have gloriously gooey caramel rolls in minutes!
Tip: To form a heart shape, take one dough roll and gently unroll about half of it. Reroll this portion to the center, forming 2 rolled portions (like a scroll). Then pinch the other end to form a point. Place the rolls in the pan with all of the points toward the center, and bake as directed.
- Be Mine Brownies. Planning a romantic dinner for two? For a show-stopping dessert, bake these pretty-in-pink brownie tarts infused with sweet cherries, amaretto liqueur and rich chocolate.
- Strawberry Pie Tarts. For your little sweethearts, make home-baked “pop tarts”! Sprinkle 2 refrigerated pre-made pie crusts generously with sugar; cut heart shapes out of each one with a cookie cutter. Place a spoonful of Rhubarb Strawberry Fruit Spread on half of the heart cut-outs. Top each one with a second heart cut-out.
Press together the edges with a fork or the flat end of a skewer, brushing the edges with an egg wash to seal. Bake at 400°F for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. For an extra sweet touch, you can either sprinkle the tarts with colored sparkling sugar before baking, or frost them while they’re slightly warm from the oven!
Red Velvet & Cream Cheese Swirled Brownies.
And last but not least, stir up my personal favorite – rich and decadent red velvet brownies, swirled with luscious cream cheese. Cut ‘em into squares, or use a heart-shaped cookie cutter! See the full recipe here »
I mean, what’s not to love, right?
Happy Valentine’s Day, and happy baking, friends!
