5-Star Desserts Make the Holidays Shine

Long, long ago, when I was an undergrad, my alma mater put on an annual medieval-style Christmas feast. Attending the first time, I was excited to read the menu and see dessert listed as the famous "figgy pudding" of the familiar Christmas carol.

Alas, I found this traditional holiday sweet to be … disappointing. I won't be demanding anyone "bring us a figgy pudding and bring it right now!" this year. Instead, I'll be loading the dessert table with nostalgic favorites made easy the Tastefully Simple way!

Cranberries, with their bright red color and tart-sweet flavor, are a classic element of many holiday dishes, and desserts are no exception. I'm all on board the cranberry train this season with two festive, easy-to-make cakes.

Nana's Cran-Nog Cake. It's hard to imagine a more Christymassy combo than cranberries (dried, in this recipe) and egg nog. Nana's Apple Cake Mix is the super-simple secret to this pretty, delicious cake. I’m serving it as mini trifles, layered with egg nog-flavored instant pudding.

Cranberry Almond Cake With Butter Sauce. This sweet loaf cake makes a pretty display on a tray, and the butter cream sauce takes the indulgence factor to the next level.

And one more to complete the sweet feast:

Truffle Tree. Looking for a showpiece for your holiday table? A truffle tree never fail to impress. Making truffles can be a fiddly process, but using the recipes for Truffle Fudge Truffles, Snowman Truffles, English Toffee Truffles and Buckeye Truffles made it easy and fun to create a nice variety of truffles.

To make the truffle tree, just cover a styrofoam cone with aluminum foil. Skewer each truffle with a toothpick and, starting from the bottom of the "tree," insert the truffles to cover the cone.

Three desserts might seem a truffle … er, trifle extravagant. But I believe when it comes to the holidays - or dessert in general - more is more. (This is also why Mohror is more, but we'll worry about the weight loss plan after New Year's!)

Wishing you a joyous and simply delicious holiday.
