Love pizza? Love tacos? Welcome to the best of both worlds.
As a thirty-something mom of two boys, I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but we eat pizza every single week in our house. We also make tacos every week or two. But for some reason, it had never occurred to me to make taco pizza at home for my family – bringing together two of my kiddos' all-time favorite foods.
And, as I watched my kids devour it the other night, I wondered why I waited so long.
Yes, today we're talking about … Taco Pizza!
No need to tip a delivery driver. You can make this quick and delicious dinner right at home in 30 minutes. Step 1: Make the Meat
Preheat your oven to 425°F. In a medium skillet, brown ½ pound lean ground beef until it's no longer pink, about 5-6 minutes. Drain. Then stir in 1/3 cup water and 1¼ tablespoon Mom's Favorite Taco Seasoning. Cook 5 minutes, and remove from heat.
(Confession: I MAY have used an entire pound of ground beef because I didn’t read the recipe closely enough. But our kiddos are big meat-eaters, and it still turned out great!)
Step 2: Stir Up the Sauce
In a small bowl, combine 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce with 1¼ tablespoon Mom's Favorite Taco Seasoning. (Seriously. Easiest. Sauce. Ever.)
Step 3: Put It All Together
Grease a 15 x 10 rimmed baking sheet or jelly roll pan. Press 1 (11 ounce) tube of refrigerated thin crust pizza dough into the pan.
Spread it with the prepared taco sauce, like so …
Sprinkle with taco meat and 1½ cups Mexican-blend shredded cheese (or just use the whole bag, if you love cheese like we do).
Bake 10-12 minutes, or until the cheese is gloriously melted and golden brown.
Step 4: Add Your Favorite Taco Fixin's
Just add your favorite taco toppings, like chopped tomatoes, shredded lettuce, sliced black olives and (everybody's favorite!) nacho cheese tortilla chips.
That's it! You've got your own home-cooked pizza, fresh from the oven. And since it's ready in 30 minutes, that means you can spend less time in the kitchen – and more time around the table.
Tips & Hints:
- Serve with Avocado & Corn Salad, fresh fruit or chips with guacamole. (And maybe even margaritas if you've had a really long day.)
- For other fun toppings, try sour cream, black beans, salsa or chopped avocado.
- If you have any kiddos or picky eaters in the house, set up a station for your fresh toppings and let everybody build their own slices.
- Want to make individual taco pizzas? Substitute mini naan breads in place of the refrigerated pizza crust dough. It's a quick and easy shortcut, especially if you'd like to try grilling 'em!
