Pretzel Boneless Wings

I have heard that "buffalo wings" were invented when a bar in Buffalo, NY, received a large delivery of chicken wings by mistake. Faced with this windfall, they wisely cooked up piles of wings to serve in the bar that night, much to the delight of the lucky patrons. Eventually the concept went wild, and by the 80s they had become a staple at taverns and pubs.

I have also heard that the increase in demand for chicken wings results in a surplus of chicken breasts, and thus the "boneless chicken wing" was invented ... turns out they are really just sliced up chicken breasts and not actual chicken wings. I don't know if either story is true, but I do know that our recipe for Pretzel Boneless Wings is fab!

They're baked, not fried, with a light dipping sauce that is packed with flavor. So how about a handful of wings this weekend? Whether you're serving family or your favorite football fans ... these are sure to be a winner!

Pretzel Boneless Wings & Sweet Jalapeño Mustard

  • 2 cups honey mustard and onion flavored pretzel pieces
  • 1 teaspooon ground cumin
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts, sliced into strips and patted dry
  • 2 tablespoons spicy brown mustard

Preheat oven to 425°. Place pretzels in a resealable bag; crush with a rolling pin to crumbs. Add cumin and shake to blend. Dip the chicken strips into egg, toss a few at a time in pretzel crumbs; shake to coat. Bake on greased baking sheet 15-20 minutes, until golden brown and no longer pink in the center. While chicken is baking, blend Sweet Pepper Jalapeno Jam with mustard; serve sauce with wings for dipping.

Tips and Hints

  • You can also make this recipe using wings or drumsticks.
  • Your coating will stick better if you pat the chicken dry. No need to rinse the chicken ... in fact, the USDA is very anti-chicken-washing because we all tend to splatter and splash bacteria all over the kitchen when we rinse.
  • I have to say that the sauce is surprisingly delicious! My husband is not a fan of mustard, but he sure lapped up this sauce!
  • These are amazingly easy to make, and my family was totally wowed!
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Big Hit for get togethers AND family dinners! We served these at our Super Bowl Party and they got RAVE reviews. So much so that my family requested them for dinner again that next week! Love it when I get requests and don't have to figure out what's for dinner myself!
