I love searching for new recipes online. I rarely actually make the recipes I find, but I really enjoy reading them, looking at the photos and pretending I'll make them some day in the future.
Recently I came across an interesting concept, though, that made me take action - putting French fries on a steak salad. It was called a "Pittsburgh-style steak salad." It sounded amazing, but to make sure it wasn't some kind of Pinterest prank that would lead to a major kitchen fail, I Googled it to make sure it was a real recipe. (You know you can't believe everything you read on the internet, except for this blog!)
Lucky for us, it turns out a steak and French fry salad is an actual thing in the Pittsburgh region. And since I'm always looking for creative and fun ways to get my family to eat more leafy greens and vegetables, this was the perfect recipe for me to Tastefully Simple-ize!
So here is what I did. I basically altered our Hearty Steak Salad recipe and created my own Ultimate Steak & Fries Salad.
First, I put the French fries in the oven. I purchased a bag that promised to be "extra crispy," because I read that the fries acted kind of like a crouton on the salad.
I haven't really used Ultimate Steak Seasoning much in my cooking, but after this meal I quickly realized what I've been missing. Everything you need to perfectly season a steak is really in that one shaker jar - no need to add anything else.
Next, I grilled the steaks over medium-high heat.
Now for the moment of truth; this was the first time in my life I ever grilled a steak. I love steak. I've eaten many steaks. I've just never prepared one myself. So to be honest, my steak turned out to be a little more pink that I personally like it. However, no one fell ill after eating my meal, so I think it's safe to say I succeeded.
While the steaks were grilling, I prepared all the ingredients for my salad.
I opened a bag of Romaine lettuce. (I was nervous enough over my ability to cook a steak; I didn't need to worry about washing and chopping lettuce!) Then I cut up some grape tomatoes, a cucumber and hard-boiled eggs. I also set aside some shredded cheese and the baked French fries.
Once the steaks were finished, I let them rest as I started to layer the salad.
First I added the lettuce, then sprinkled on some cheese and add the cucumber, grape tomatoes and hard-boiled eggs. I thinly sliced the steak and added that as the next layer. To top it off, I added the French fries.
For the finishing touch, I drizzled some ranch dressing over the salad.
