I tend to add things to dishes that aren’t necessarily in the recipe, but that I have on hand, so why not? My mom basically never made just a chocolate chip cookie. Instead, there were butterscotch or health chips in the cookie, too. I may have inherited this trait from her. (I’ve learned my husband hates this. Party pooper!) Something I love about salads is that you can customize as you like them – plain or add-so-many-toppings-you-can’t-see-the-lettuce type of salads.
Let’s talk about this Ultimate Winter Salad. Toppings? Check. What makes it so ultimate? Well, a number of reasons. A big one is that it’s made with the ever-delicious Ultimate Sweet Potatoes. (#yummy) You can toss these on the salad or eat them on the side. Or in my case, both!
Another great way to add flavor to your salad is by changing up the variety of lettuce. Add color by using radicchio (pronounced rad-EE-key-o), a type of lettuce that is red in color and has more of a bold flavor with crunch. You’ll see this included in salad blends you can buy at the grocery store. Now you know what that purple and white lettuce is!
A lot of times when I order a salad at a restaurant, they have fruit mixed in and it’s amazing! I never think to add fruit to my salad, so I recently started sprinkling whatever fruit I have on hand (there I go again!). Oranges on top give a great citrus pop that’s so delicious.
I do think the Ultimate Winter Salad is ultimate because, well, it’s got a list of ultimate toppings!
