Witch Hat Cupcakes

Halloween - a holiday my two nephews just LOVE. Cole is 11 and Leighton is 8, and I bet I could rattle off almost every single one of their Halloween costumes. So cute ... cough ... I mean, HANDSOME! They're getting older now, and don't appreciate being called "cute" as much as I would like.

I love making kid-friendly Halloween treats for them.

I thought for a minute about trying to make these fun Witch Hat Cupcakes together with my nephews. Then, as if in a dream sequence, I had visions of heading into a sugar battle ... the kitchen island our battlefield ... spatulas our weapons of choice ... with cupcake bombs and EXTRA frosting flying in the air ... whoa - shake it off ... back to reality.

I'm sure your children will be VERY well behaved while making these, and won't sneak extra frosting even once. And if they do? Well ... Halloween is a time for tricks, treats and a whole lotta sweets. So embrace the sugar rush because your kids are going to LOVE making these with you.

Enjoy!

Witch Hat Cupcakes

Ingredients

  • Chewy Chocolate Cookie Mix
  • 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup hot water
  • 16 oz. container frosting (vanilla or chocolate)
  • 12 sugar ice cream cones
  • Decorating sugar in color of your choice (optional)
  • 12 frosted cupcakes

Directions

Preheat oven to 350°. Combine first 3 ingredients until dough forms. Roll into generous 1-inch balls; place 2 inches apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake 12-14 minutes. Cool. Make a ring of frosting on one cookie slightly larger than the opening of an ice cream cone. Press ice cream cone into the frosting. Add decorator sugar on the remaining frosting around the cone to make a colored "ribbon" at the base of each hat. Repeat for 12 hats. Press a hat onto each cupcake. Makes 12 Witch Hat Cupcakes.

Tips and Hints

  • You could add lots of embellishments to your hats - fun designs, licorice bows, candy straws for "hair" - the ideas are endless.
  • I think it would be fun to add some googly eyes to the cupcakes just under the hat so it started to resemble a witch's face.
  • I could only find these lighter colored sugar cones. They work well, but I think chocolate cones would be AWESOME.
